“So many interesting things happen on the surface. Content is often overrated.” – Martin Bril
As a photographer, I focus on what appears on the surface—what reveals itself. A convergence of moment, form, and light. Whether it’s an abandoned bag of candy on the street or a minister on a working visit.
My personal work is created on the street, mostly in large cities. Like a flâneur without a predetermined plan, I seek the tension between capturing an image and allowing room for imagination. I often photograph situations in which I see a certain beauty or humor or that leave me in wonder. It can be about the big in the small, a specific moment in which something reveals itself or about the relationship between man, city and nature. But light, color and contrast can also be a subject. As long as it reveals something of the extraordinary in the everyday.
My passion for observing is what led me to study art, and later specifically photography.
I hold a bachelor degree in Art and Design Education from the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences / Willem de Kooning Academy (BA). Later I successfully completed the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam and then continued to study photography at the St. Joost School of Art & Design (MA).
Alongside my personal work, I’ve been enjoying photographing for businesses, governments, and social organizations for over twenty years now. I consider the trust clients place in me a true honor and therefore also a serious responsibility. After all, in commissioned work, the outcome has to be good under all circumstances. Sometimes I achieve this by taking the role of a fly on the wall, other times by taking a more directive approach. In short, I do whatever is needed to get the best result.
